It's part of what makes vintage Rolex so much fun to collect. Last week a new website popped up dedicated entirely to picking apart the history of the reference 5513 matte dial Submariner, cataloging the many subtle changes in the matte 5513 over its nearly 20-year production history. Dial is original, nice vivid cream patina with matching cream patina hands. There is some even aging/spotting if you look at macro pictures on the dial (this is normal, and correct for Pre-Comex dials having had several examples with similar aging)The watch presented here is the archetype of the 5513 Comex, with its non logo dial and small delivery number. It comes with a letter from the diver, telling the story of the watch. Of course this is a key feature for such a watch, because the glorious past of the timepiece is exactly what makes it desirable.
The Pre-Comex dial is only seen in the 5 mil serial range cases and the name "Pre-Comex" was coined for this dial as it shared a lot of the same dial fonts and characteristics of the Rolex ref. 5514 Comex watches. The unique characteristics of the Pre-Comex dials are: Open 6‘s in the depth rating.
