John Francis Williams – Jack to all who knew him – ordered this "monoblocco" (one-block, referring to the one-piece case and bezel) chronograph, while he was held in captivity in the German camp Stalag Luft III, back in 1942, shortly after his plane was shot down during a daylight raid over France.
Produced for only about six years from 1939-1945, reference 3525 is the first Rolex chronograph fitted in a water resistant Oyster case and is the model Hans Wilsdorf sent to English officers who were imprisoned during WWII. The model was produced in stainless steel, pink and yellow gold or two toned steel and gold.Coming from the “second batch” of watches manufactured by Rolex in the early 1940’s, this 3525 has an exceptionally well preserved case and was fitted by Rolex with a black lacquer dial with gold graphics, luminous markers and gilt luminous hands.Manufactured from 1939 to 1945, the 3525 was the first chronograph with the Rolex water-resistant ‘Oyster’ case (nicknamed the ‘Monoblocco’ as the case is made from one piece of material), and features a screw down caseback and crown.
