Yamaha has experimented with many designs over the years and the YSL-651 is example of some of their earlier work in. My used Yamaha YSL-651 appears to have had repairs made to the tuning slide and now shows the yellow brass that is the actual material that it is made of. Traces of the original nickle plating are still visible. This is interesting to me because this model is usually said to be entirely nickel-silver other than the red brass bell.
1973 Yamaha YSL-651 Tenor Trombone This is a good condition tenor trombone, made during the early to mid-1970s. It has a red brass bell (though it's a lot pinker than most red brass), and nickel plate.
Yamaha YSL-651 Super Mint Condition, Barely Played Vintage 1980's Model. Has 8" Rose Brass Bell with .500 Bore nickel silver slide. All original parts and lacquer. This is a super nice small bore and plays perfectly. Rose Brass Bells play darker than yellow brass, less highs in overall sound. I bought another instrument recommended by the teacher - the newly released snd short-lived Yamaha YSL-841. This was almost (but not quite) as good as the Elkhart 8H. It has the unusual feature of a .551” bore.

Yamaha YSL-653, Jazz trombone, has 8" Yellow brass bell, .500 bore handslide. This is a pro level horn from the early 1980's. Is in overall excellent playing condition. The line features four models, all of which are perfect for professional trombone players as well as college level musicians. The new models all feature 8.5-in. yellow brass bells and gold epoxy lacquer. The YSL-610 Professional Trombone replaces the YSL-681G, and features a .547-in. bore. I've just got in the mail my new small bore jazz horn. It's a Yamaha ysl-653, and she's a little rough but I love her regardless. Plays great aside from a few pain points. There's some dent work to be done on the tuning slide, but I've got a guy for that. My main issues are lacquer related.
