The Explorer 1016 was produced with a host of dial variations. They can be roughly divided into two main categories — gilt dials (up until ca. 1967) and matte dials .Rolex Explorer Reference 1016 Gilt Dial. Introduced in 1960 an icon was born in the Rolex Explorer reference 1016. The 1016 was produced until circa 1989. This example features a beautiful gilt dial. Over the past decades, the Explorer – and its longest running model the 1016 – has risen with the popularity of vintage watches to become a sought-after cornerstone of collections everywhere.The Type 6 dial is the most common gilt 1016. While this and the Type 5 dials start in the 10xxxxx range, the Type 6 is the latest gilt dial produced so I have designated it as the final “mark.”
Type 0 (OCC) Serial Range: 516xxx-596xxx. The first 1016 dial is the easiest to pick out. It is the only dial variation that carries over the movement certification from the 6610, “officially certified / chronometer” (often referred to as ‘OCC’).
Type 1. This dial, along with the other chapter ring variations, are the first of the 1016 dials with the “superlative chronometer / officially certified” or ‘SCOC’ text that is seen on all 1016’s except for the transitional OCC dial.Please click on the hyperlink in the captions below to navigate to each dial variation and learn about the details of each. Appearing in a narrow serial range, it’s beautiful and balanced font and layout is my personal favorite. The crown and font appears very similar (if not identical) to that of the Type 6 gilt dial.
